Workshop to Address Reducing Mold Growth at Home

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa's wet spring will lead to mold growth in many homes when the rain ends. To help Iowa homeowners reduce the growth of mold and mildew, which can cause health problems as well as odors, Iowa State University (ISU) Extension will sponsor a regional workshop June 19 in Council Bluffs.

The workshop is part of the national program Healthy Indoor Air for America's Homes. ISU Extension is one of many sponsors of the program, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The speakers include a USDA expert on mold and its health effects, a faculty member from the University of Iowa who will discuss health problems related to mold, and a North Dakota State University Extension specialist who will relate his experiences with mold after the extensive flooding of the Red River. Workshop participants will receive printed materials and have the chance to ask questions of the speakers.

The workshop is open to the public. Registration, including the $25 registration fee, is due June 11. For more information or to register, contact Marilyn Bode at (515) 294-5327.

In addition, ISU Extension offers two Web-only publications on mold and mildew at its Web site: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/pubs/Masterlist2.html#dr. The publications are Recovery 3, Questions about Cleaning Products and Recovery 4, Preventing Mildew in Your Home.
