3/21/01 News Release Contacts: 4-H Offers Wilderness Leadership Trips To Rocky Mountains, Isle Royale Iowa teens can work on their leadership skills by exploring the wilds of the United States through a variety of 4-H wilderness leadership trips this summer. The 2001 trips offer opportunities to canoe around Isle Royale National Park or the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of northern Minnesota, paddle a sea kayak through the Apostle Islands or backpack through the Rocky Mountains or Grand Teton National Park. The Wilderness Leadership Trips for Youth are available to youths between the ages of 14 and 18. Tents, backpacks, canoes, cooking gear, food and transportation are included in the registration fee, which ranges from $400 to $435. Financial aid is available. All trips begin and end at the Iowa 4-H Education and Natural Resources Center near Madrid. "The trips focus on the teaching and gaining of leadership skills for youth as they go through the daily challenges in the wilderness," said Brenda Allen, state 4-H specialist. "The trips are led by experienced wilderness leaders who have been through the adult training course." Most of the wilderness leaders are high school teachers, county naturalists or other professionals. The trips begin in early July and run through early August. Each trip lasts one week. In addition to the youth trips, two adult leadership trips will be offered in July. Those trips will visit the Isle Royale National Park and the Rocky Mountains. For more information, to receive a brochure or to request a financial aid form, contact your county Iowa State University Extension office or Phyllis Mondt at the state 4-H office at (515) 294-1017. Financial aid requests must be made by May 1. eh ml: iprint |
