3/15/01 Contacts: Two Farrowing Schools Scheduled in Northwest Iowa Storm Lake, Iowa -- Pork producers looking for the latest information on farrowing techniques should plan to attend one of two farrowing schools in northwest Iowa. The programs are cosponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Iowa Pork Industry Center, and will take place in early April at two locations. Topics at both schools include pre-farrowing management, the farrowing process, processing piglets and management of the lactating sow and nursing pig. Participants will learn how to prepare the sow and farrowing space, when to assist a sow during farrowing and how to identify disadvantaged pigs to improve their survival rate. The first program is a two-day event at the Buena Vista County Extension office in Storm Lake. It features ISU Extension field specialists Jerry Weiss, Dave Stender and Kris Kohl. This program is set for April 2 and 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Cost is $30 per person, which includes lunch and refreshments. Additional people from the same operation may attend for $15 each. Registrations should be sent to the Pocahontas County Extension office and are due by March 28. Make checks payable to ISU Extension. The second program will be held April 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Western Iowa Tech Community College, 200 Victory Drive in Cherokee. Cosponsor for this program is Valley Veterinary Center of Cherokee. Speakers include ISU Extension field specialist Dave Stender and Steve Sonka, DVM, of Valley Veterinary Center.
