3/2/01 Contacts: Discover Your World At Iowa 4-H Camp AMES, Iowa -- Get ready for summer -- and summer camp -- at the Iowa 4-H Education and Natural Resources Center. Located near Madrid, the 4-H center has programs for everyone from kindergarten through adult. For example, Growing in the Garden is a youth program for children in grades K through 3. Youths bring an adult and have fun learning to plant, play and explore the outdoors. Growing in the Garden also offers a teacher's training program. Bring a Big Person Camp is open to campers ages 6 to 9. Campers bring an adult and try new things away from home. This camp is a great introduction to camp life. Discover the Leader Within Camp is open to teens ages 15 through 17 who want to discover their true leadership powers. Tract sessions, a new feature of 4-H camp, will be offered in addition to the specialized camps. The multiple tracts allow campers to attend the same session with friends, even if they don't have the same interest. The Great Outdoors is a tract session that will teach facts such as what makes up a pond and where deer sleep. The Water World tract session will be offered to those who want to get wet every day. The Fishing Adventure tract session will help campers improve their fishing skills by teaching them to think like a fish. Horse n' Around remains one of the most popular tracts, MacNeir said. "These tracts always fill up fast." A similar session, Bring Your Own Horse, encourages campers ages 12 to 16 to bring their horses or ponies with them. The sessions begin in early June and continue through the summer. Early bird registration is due May 15; a late fee will be charged after that date. Scholarships are available from the Iowa 4-H Foundation. For information, contact your ISU extension county office and request the financial aid form (VI-309-FS). All of the sessions are held at the Iowa 4-H Education and Natural Resources Center, which is accredited by the American Camping Association. Iowa State University Extension staff conduct the sessions with the help of professionals and students. For registration information about specific sessions, contact the Iowa 4-H Education and Natural Resources Center, 1991 Peach Ave., Madrid, Iowa 50156; phone (515) 795-3338 or email ia4hctr@iastate.edu.
