7/16/01 Contacts: Story County Family Hosts 4-H'er from Costa Rica AMES, Iowa -- Eduardo Garcia, a student from Costa Rica, will visit Story City from August 12 through September 8 as a part of the International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) Representative program. Garcia is staying with John and Angela Rieck-Heinz. Garcia, 20, arrived in Iowa July 2. He will visit three families between now and Sept. 8. He has previously stayed with host families in Floyd and Poweshiek counties. IFYE program participants visit the United States from Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa to live and work with several host families for three to six months. Participants take part in the host families' daily life and interact with host organizations, which are similar to 4-H. "We feel this program is important because of the opportunities it provides Iowa families to learn about another culture," said Brenda Allen, state program 4-H specialist. "You also learn more about yourself when you share your culture with others." For more information about IFYE and future host opportunities, contact your county extension office or Brenda Allen at the state ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development office at (515) 294-1567.
