7/12/01 Contact: 4-H Animal Skillathon at the 2001 Iowa State Fair AMES, Iowa -- The 4-H Animal Skillathon program will be held for the second time at the 2001 Iowa State Fair. This is a chance for youths and adults to work together to educate the public about beef, sheep, swine, horses, dogs and poultry. "It's a great opportunity for 4-H'ers and non-4-H'ers to share their knowledge of animals, learn more about animals and have fun at the same time," said Denise Schwab, Iowa State University Extension 4-H specialist. Skillathons consist of four to five stations containing questions and activities on different areas of animals such as basic breed and body part identification, skeletal structure, handling, health problems and bone structure of the hoof. Participants can go through the stations and earn stickers on a certificate of achievement as well as a packet of information about 4-H. 4-H members will staff the stations and any fairgoer can participate in the Skillathons. "The objectives of this program are to provide 4-H youths an opportunity to participate in a non-competitive learning experience at the Iowa State Fair and to provide non-4-H'ers attending the Iowa State Fair to experience hands-on learning related to animal projects," Schwab said. The following Skillathon events will be on these dates: horse & rabbit, Aug. 9; sheep, Aug. 13; beef, Aug. 15; poultry, Aug. 17; swine, Aug. 17; dog, Aug. 17; general Aug. 10, 16 and 18. General Skillathons will take place in the 4-H Exhibit Building.
