Youth Role in Community Development is Jan. 30 Topic

AMES, Iowa -- The connection between a healthy, active youth population and community success is the topic of a conference Jan. 30 at Iowa State University.

The 2001 Healthy Communities/Healthy Youth/Healthy Iowa Conference, "Connecting Communities to Iowa's Future," will provide an opportunity for community members from across the state to explore the battle of a steady decline in their youth population. This steady decline is drawing community and state leaders to look at the retention of Iowa Youth and ways to address this issue.

The "Connecting Communities to Iowa's Future" conference is open to the general public, to parents, teachers, youth workers, neighbors, youth, local government members, business representatives and anyone else who would like to help their community to focus on building assets in youth and creating a healthy and expanding community. Sessions will include Iowa's strategic planning efforts, successful youth development programs, church and community building, leadership, community initiative efforts, development research and character development.

The conference will be held Tuesday, Jan. 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Memorial Union on the Iowa State University Campus in Ames. The cost is $45 for adults and $35 for youth, which includes registration and lunch.

The registration form is available at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/hchyhi/ or from ISU Extension Continuing Education and Communication Services at (800) 262-0015.
