1/5/01 Contacts: Tri-State Forestry Conference Scheduled AMES, Iowa-- Southeast Iowa forest landowners interested in learning how to better manage their forested land are encouraged to attend the Tri-State Forest Steward Conference. The conference is scheduled for Saturday, March 24 at the Quincy Holiday Inn in Quincy, Ill. The conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude at 4:45 p.m. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., with opportunities to visit with your Department of Natural Resources District Forester. "Studies indicate that most landowners have more than one objective for their woodland acreage and often the primary objective is not timber management," said Paul Wray, Iowa State University Extension forestry specialist and conference committee member. Because of landowners' diverse interests, the conference offers a variety of programs designed to help make them better stewards of the natural resources found on their property. For landowners interested in growing timber as a crop, part of the conference will focus on management aspects to improve the woodland resource and the economic returns from products grown and harvested from existing woodland or a forest plantation. Topics include growing high value timber species, conducting a successful timber sale and processing wood products from your woodland. For landowners with non-timber interests, the conference includes presentations on tree identification, woodland wildflower propagation and identification, and native woodlands with exotic species invasion. It also will include tree pruning and planting techniques, riparian forest buffers and government cost-share programs. For landowners interested in possible ways to diversify their income, the conference features presentations on agroforestry (or multicropping), nut tree culturing, collecting tree seed for income and leased hunting opportunities. The conference registration fee is $30 per person (two for $55) and includes a continental breakfast and a luncheon. Landowners interested in attending the conference must register by Feb. 23. A conference brochure that includes a registration form is available at county Extension, Soil and Water Conservation District, and Natural Resource Conservation Service offices, and state Department of Natural Resources field offices. It also can be obtained by writing, e-mailing or calling Paul H. Wray, Extension forester, 253 Bessey Hall, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011 (e-mail: phw@iastate.edu) or (phone: 515-294-1168). The conference is co-sponsored by Illinois, Iowa and Missouri Extension; the Illinois and Iowa Departments of Natural Resources, the Missouri Department of Conservation; the Natural Resources Conservation Services in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri; and the Department of Forestry at Iowa State University, the University of Missouri School of Natural Resources, and the University of Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences. af ml: isufarm |
