Cherokee County 4-H'ers Compete in National Horse Classic Event

Three Cherokee County 4-H'ers represented Iowa at the National 4-H Horse Classic-Western Division Jan. 4 through 7 in Denver. The Cherokee County team placed fourth in the hippology contest.

Team members earned the right to compete at the national level by winning the state competition, said extension 4-H specialist Denise Schwab. Team members included Megan Wiemold, Beth Rueter and Melanie Corrington. The team was coached by Peggy Corington.

"In the hippology contest, participants complete a written exam about all areas of horse knowledge and take part in a series of stations where they identify various types of tack, equipment, feeds, blemishes, and horse parts," Schwab said. "They also judge at least two classes of horses, both in conformation and performance classes. The last part of the contest is a team activity where they solve a problem and present an oral solution to a panel of judges."

As a group, the Cherokee County team placed seventh in the examination section, fifth in the horse judging portion, second in the station division and third in the team problem solving presentation. Individually, Wiemold placed third in the judging section and fourth overall in stations. Corrington placed seventh in the station category.

Other states competing in the hippology contest included Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho and Alberta, Canada.

The trip was sponsored by the Iowa 4-H Equine Endowment fund and the Iowa 4-H Foundation.
