Webster County 4-H'ers Compete In National Horse Classic Event

Four Webster County 4-H'ers recently represented Iowa at the National 4-H Horse Classic-Western Division Jan. 4 through 7 in Denver. The Webster County team placed fourth overall in the horse judging contest.

Team members earned the right to compete at the national level by winning the state competition, said extension 4-H specialist Denise Schwab. Team members included A.J. Blair, Steven Cooper, Annie Eslick and Lindsey Peterson.

"In the horse judging contest the participants judge both halter and performance classes," Schwab said. "They give oral reasons on two or three of the classes. In order to be successful, the team members need to know about several different breed types and ideals, as well as different riding styles and horse movements."

As a team, Webster County placed seventh in the oral reasons category, fourth in the halter classes and third in judging the performance classes. Individually, Blair placed fifth overall, fifth in reasons and fifth in the halter classes. Peterson placed eighth high individual total performance and seventh high individual performance placing.

The trip was sponsored by the Iowa 4-H Equine Endowment fund and the Iowa 4-H Foundation.
