12/20/01 Contacts: Iowa State University Students Present Ultrasound Training in Taiwan TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- Two Iowa State University (ISU) animal science students recently conducted an ultrasound training program for pork industry professionals in Taiwan. Doug Newcom and Colin Johnson provided classroom instruction and hands-on training in sessions on ultrasound scanning and carcass evaluation for 10 technicians. The training was held at the experimental farm of Tung-Hai University, and was sponsored by the Pig Research Institute Taiwan (PRIT) and the Council of Agriculture in Taiwan. Local arrangements for the training sessions in Taiwan were made by En-Chung Lin, who received his Ph.D. in animal breeding from ISU. Newcom and Johnson are students of ISU assistant professor Tom Baas. Newcom is a Ph.D. student and Johnson is a masters student. Both are certified ultrasound technicians through the National Swine Improvement Federation, and provided ultrasound scanning services for more than 20 counties this past summer. -30- |
