Producer, Veterinarian on next ICN Sheep Program

AMES, Iowa -- The third program in the winter series for Iowa sheep producers is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at more than 20 classrooms in the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). The program will include information on marketing and on ram management. It is co-sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and the Iowa Sheep and Wool Promotion Board.

Speakers will include Ronnie Gibson, a commercial producer from Copeland, Kans., who will discuss "Why we are excited about the sheep industry." His operation includes 500 ewes and wheat and hay crops. Gibson will share his cost and methods of production. He also will describe a group marketing alliance with Superior Lamb Packing Company.

Dr. Suelee Robbe, Iowa State University veterinarian, will discuss ram management and breeding soundness exams. Results from the Northwest Iowa ram clinics conducted in August 2001 also will be presented.

More than 20 sites are hosting locations for this series. Information on sites is available from county extension offices or from Dan Morrical, ISU Extension sheep specialist. at (515) 294-0847. There is a participation fee of $5 per person to help recover cost of conducting this program.

The final session in the series, with information on mastitis, udder health and footrot eradication, is scheduled for Jan. 8.
