4-H Carcass Winners Announced

4-H carcass winners recently were announced at the viewing of the champion animals held at the ISU Meat Laboratory.

The champion overall 4-H derby pig was shown by Anthony Schulte from Lee County. His pig weighed 305 pounds and had an average daily gain of 2.39 pounds. The pig had .60 inches of backfat and an 11.55 square-inch loin eye, resulting in 1.14 pounds of lean gain added per day on test.

The reserve champion overall 4-H derby pig was shown by Elizabeth Steffensmeier, also from Lee County. Her pig weighed 336 pounds and had an average daily gain of 2.66 pounds. Her pig had .90 inches of backfat and a 10 square-inch loin eye, for 1.099 pounds of lean gain added per day on test.

The top 28 pigs in the 4-H derby contest had more than 1 pound per day of lean gain on test.

The champion 4-H Lamb Classic lamb was shown by Staci Sieren from Washington County. Her lamb weighed 158 pounds and had an average daily gain of .866 pounds. The lamb had a 3.4 square-inch ribeye and 46.55 percent boneless closely trimmed retail cuts.

The reserve champion 4-H Lamb Classic lamb was shown by Brian Andrews from Buchanan County. His lamb weighed 114 pounds and had an average daily gain of .759 pounds. The lamb had a 2.9 square-inch ribeye and 48.27 percent boneless closely trimmed retail cuts.

Eighty-one lambs were entered in the Lamb Classic contest on June 9, and fed at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo.
