Producers Invited to Learn about Niche and Value-added Marketing Opportunities

AMES, Iowa -- Pork producers who are searching for answers to their questions on adding value to their product should plan to attend a conference focused specifically on that topic, "Niche and Value-added Marketing: What's in it for You?" The seminar is cosponsored by the Iowa Pork Industry Center and the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture and will take place in the Scheman Building at the Iowa State Center in Ames on Sept. 18. Other cooperating partners are Iowa State University (ISU) Extension, Iowa Pork Producers Association and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.

This conference offers an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities that producers, processors and retailers face in providing differentiated pork products to consumers. Keynote speakers are Leopold Center director Fred Kirschenmann and consultant Amy Barr of Marr Barr Communications in Denver, Colo. Kirschenmann's presentation is entitled, "A Pig's Tale: Marketing Stories for New Value Chains," and Barr's presentation is "Food with a Pedigree: The Future for Iowa Agriculture?"

Grocery, restaurant and supply company speakers will address market opportunities and obstacles pertinent to their specific areas during the morning session. The afternoon portion of the program consists of breakout sessions in two tracks: "Labeling and Other Assorted Legalities" and "Existing Value Chains." The day will end with a reception in the lobby area at 4:45 p.m.

Registration fee is $50 per person when received by Sept. 12 and $60 per person after that date. Walk-in registrations will be accepted the day of the program, but the noon meal is not guaranteed. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the program begins at 9 a.m.

For more information or to preregister, check with local ISU Extension livestock field specialists or, in Iowa, call IPIC's PORKLine at (800) 808-7675. The program brochure, including a registration form, is available through the IPIC Web site at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/ipic/events.html.
