4/23/01 News Release Contacts: Applications Being Accepted for 4-H Volunteers at the Iowa State Fair AMES, Iowa -- Applications are being accepted through June 1 for a variety of 4-H volunteer and paid positions at the 2001 Iowa State Fair, Aug. 9 through 19. 4-H volunteers at the state fair perform a vital role, from planning events before the fair to supervising exhibits throughout the 11-day event. Some of the 150 positions are full-time and begin Aug. 6; others are for a few days. Volunteers are needed in all areas, from clothing and communication to livestock and agriculture and natural resources. Adults can serve as superintendents and assistants for several areas, such as expressive arts, food and nutrition and engineering. High school students can work as media assistants, exhibit hosts, office supervisors and livestock show assistants. Students who are 12 or older can distribute t-shirts, present ribbons and help at shows. Volunteers and paid staff members need not be 4-H members. For more information or to apply to work as a 4-H volunteer or paid staff member at the Iowa State Fair, contact the Iowa State University Extension office in your county.
