New ISU Extension Grape Web Site Online

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa grape growers now have access to information through a new Iowa State University Extension Web site.

The ISU Viticulture Web site was developed to provide prospective grape growers with reliable information to assess risks, requirements and economics of grape production and provide information on cultural practices for growing grapes, according to Paul Domoto, ISU Extension fruit specialist. The site is located at http://viticulture.hort.iastate.edu/.

"During the past year, many Iowans became interested in growing grapes and developing wineries in Iowa," said Domoto. "This interest has come about from established Iowa wineries seeking local sources of grapes to expand their production, seeing what neighboring states have done in increasing wine production and tying it in with agrotourism and the mystic of owning a winery."

"This Web site will be a fast and easy method of receiving the latest information on viticulture from ISU Extension whenever you want it," said Jerry DeWitt, ISU Extension to Agriculture and Natural Resources program director. "Night or day, you will be able to access practical and easy to understand information for the individual first starting up or for those who are considering grapes as a supplemental enterprise."

The site includes information from a grape growing workshop jointly sponsored by ISU Extension, the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, the Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association and the newly chartered Iowa Grape Growers Association. It also includes material prepared by ISU Extension and links to information available from other states in the Midwest and the eastern United States where grape varieties adapted to Iowa are grown.
