4/16/01 Contacts: State 4-H Horse Jamboree Winners Announced Ames, Iowa -- More than 300 Iowa 4-H members participated in the fifth annual 4-H Youth Horse Jamboree, held April 7 and 8 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Several of the winners will represent Iowa 4-H at the 2002 Denver Horse Classic in January. The jamboree is sponsored by the Iowa Horse Industry Council, Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. It features a series of contests that give youths an opportunity to demonstrate their equine knowledge and skills. The hippology contest allows youths to demonstrate their knowledge and skill of equine science and husbandry. Johnson County Team 1, which received top honors in the contest, will represent Iowa 4-H in Denver in January. The team is comprised of Jenna DeBrower, Rachel Martz, Daphne Nelson and Kristin Martz. Placing second was Johnson County Team 2, comprised of Joanna Krajewski, Jessica Smith, Kelly Johnson and Nora Doyle. The quiz bowl is a timed event that consists of one-on-one, toss-up and bonus questions. Van Buren County placed first and will attend the Denver Horse Classic. Team members include Sam Miller, Brandin Schrader, Patrick Thomas, Ben Cloke and Christine Hotle. Second place went to Webster County, which includes Steve Cooper, Leigh Streit, Annie Eslick, Stephanie Suhrbrier and Katie Martin. Brea Christensen of Guthrie County placed first in the public speaking contest and will attend the Denver Horse Classic. Her entry was titled "Tails of the Trail." Cord Overton of Black Hawk County also will represent Iowa in Denver. He took top honors in the demonstration category with his "Saddle Police &endash; 911" demonstration.
