4/16/01 News Release #2 -- 2001 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference Contacts: Registration Due May 15 For Iowa 4-H Youth Conference AMES, Iowa -- Registration is under way for the 2001 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference, "Step Outside Yourself." The conference will be held June 26 to 28 on the campus of Iowa State University (ISU) in Ames. Any Iowa teen who has completed 8th through 12th grade this spring is invited to attend. Participants need not be 4-H members to attend. This year's line up of motivational speakers includes Josh Shipp, the youngest person ever admitted to the National Speakers' Bureau; Harriet Turk, a former cheerleader; and Chris Bowers, a speaker from the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership conferences. Participants also will attend interactive workshops -- topics include food science in space, engineer scavenger hunt, and glass blowing -- and participate in community service activities. Each participant is asked to bring a canned good to donate to an area food bank. "The conference has been planned by teens, so it's designed to be fun, while giving youths a chance to learn and experience a variety of activities" said Brenda Allen, Iowa 4-H youth specialist. "Because the youths stay in university dorms they get a taste of college life. They also will have the chance to participate in activities such as bowling, dances and a formal banquet." Comedy Sportz, an improvisational group, will provide the entertainment at the banquet. The $100 registration fee includes meals, housing and workshop expenses and is due May 15.
