4/10/01 Contacts: Farmers Learn about Nitrogen Options AMES, Iowa -- A poster titled "Nitrogen Options" is currently on display at fertilizer dealerships, county extension offices, and USDA Farm Service Agency and USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service offices throughout Iowa. The poster provides suggestions and additional resources to farmers who have questions or concerns about nitrogen management on their farm. "Nitrogen Options" was produced and distributed as part of an ongoing educational initiative to improve water quality in Iowa. Water quality improvements in Iowa's surface waters will come through the use of proven, research-based and farm-tested management practices. John Creswell, Nutrient Management Project coordinator for Iowa State University Extension, says the poster helps farmers better understand nitrogen in their operation. "The information featured on the poster includes accounting for all nitrogen sources in a growing season, suggested nitrogen rates for corn production, evaluating realistic crop productivity and other management keys, such as working with dealers to use proven practices." Iowa Department of Natural Resources Director Jeff Vonk says the poster and the educational effort are a step in the right direction. "Proper nitrogen management offers a real opportunity to increase the bottom line of Iowa's farming operations while making significant improvements in Iowa's water quality." The poster was sponsored by the Agribusiness Association of Iowa; Iowa Certified Crop Advisors; Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Division of Soil Conservation; Iowa Department of Natural Resources; ISU Extension; and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
