Iowa Beef Center ICN Grabs Beef Issues by the Horns

AMES -- As more and more beef industry issues land in front page headlines, producers often realize more questions from reading the local newspaper than answers.

"Many producers are concerned about all the global events that have happened recently," said John Lawrence, director of the Iowa Beef Center. "However, they're unsure of how best to deal with these unfolding situations."

The Iowa Beef Center is sponsoring an ICN conference aimed at answering these questions. The conference will be held Wednesday, April 18 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Topics include:

Open Feedlot Regulations...
* Current compliance with Iowa Department of Natural Resources regulations,
* The Iowa Open Feedlot Plan, and
* Registration and limited amnesty programs from the DNR.

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)...
* Your role in preventing BSE in the U.S.,
* Ban on feeding ruminant by-products, and
* Certification and safeguards.

"Through this ICN conference, the Iowa Beef Center hopes to answer many of the questions producers have on current issues and help them make informed management decisions," Lawrence said.

Presentations will be given by the Iowa Beef Center, Iowa State University Extension, the Iowa Cattlemen's Association and the Iowa DNR.

Nearly 25 sites statewide will be hosting this conference. For more information about sites and fees, please visit the Iowa Beef Center Web site at http://www.iowabeefcenter.org or contact your local area ISU Extension livestock field specialist.
