4/6/01 For immediate release Contacts: ISU, United Way Offer Second Nonprofit Management Institute AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University and United Way of Central Iowa have again combined their expertise to offer a nonprofit management institute in Des Moines. The Nonprofit Management Institute (NPMI) was established in 1999 by ISU in partnership with the United Way Management Assistance Program to enhance the management skills of those serving in the nonprofit sector. Building on the success of the first institute, a second institute will be offered beginning this month. Institute participants can enroll in individual classes or in a program leading to a certificate in nonprofit management. To earn a certificate, a student must complete any combination of classes totaling eight Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Participants can choose from 13 courses, which will be held from April 2001 through March 2002. Most courses cost $40, with CEUs available at no additional cost. Classes will be offered at the United Way Human Services Campus Conference Center, 1111 Ninth St., Des Moines. "The Nonprofit Management Institute is unique in that it incorporates various areas related to the nonprofit sector-everything from governance and strategic planning to marketing and fund-raising. And apart from offering workshops in these different areas, the faculty represent diverse fields from academia as well as the corporate and nonprofit sectors," said Krishna Das, extension program coordinator for the Institute for Design Research and Outreach at ISU. "Anyone seeking professional development in the area of nonprofit management is invited to participate in the workshops." Past participant Lloyd Lockhart, business administrator for Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, said, "So many times you sign up for things and they are not what you expected. But everything was exceptional. It made me drive back not only the next day, but the next month and the next. It was well worth the effort to attend." In particular, "I was really impressed with the high caliber of the presenters, " Lockhart said. Among the three dozen practitioners and academicians who served as institute instructors were faculty and staff members from ISU, Drake University, and the University of Iowa. Many of these same instructors, as well as several new presenters, are a part of this year's institute.
