Foot and Mouth Disease ICN Program Set for April 11

AMES, Iowa -- As the number of foot and mouth disease (FMD) cases in Europe makes daily headlines, Iowa pork producers wonder about the possibility of the disease spreading to the United States. The Iowa Pork Industry Center at Iowa State University will offer an Iowa Communications Network (ICN) program April 11 to address concerns, fears and general interest from all members of the state's pork industry.

During the program, John Carr of ISU's Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine program will explain the development of FMD in Europe and its current status there; Beth Lautner of National Pork Producers Council will talk about U.S. efforts to keep FMD out of the country and emergency plans at national and state levels if those efforts are unsuccessful; and ISU economist Dermot Hayes will provide information on the potential financial/economic impact of the disease's presence in the United States. ISU Extension veterinarian Nolan Hartwig has been invited to explain and describe FMD and compare it with other diseases currently in the news and those similar in nature to FMD.

The program will be held April 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. at various locations around the state. The origination site is 13 Curtiss Hall on the ISU campus. Those interested in attending should check with their local ISU Extension county office for a site in the area. There is no charge to attend.
