Gov. Vilsack Proclaims Oct. 1 to 7 4-H Youth Development Week

Gov. Tom Vilsack has proclaimed Oct. 1 to 7 as 4-H Youth Development Week in Iowa. The designation is in conjunction with National 4-H Week, also Oct. 1-7.

In proclaiming 4-H Youth Development Week in Iowa, Vilsack noted that 4-H helps Iowa youth develop life skills, provides science-based information through the cooperation of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Iowa State University Extension and promotes healthy mental, physical and social habits.

One out of every four Iowans in grades K through 12 -- 120,000 youth -- are involved in 4-H. In addition, 15,000 Iowa adults volunteer in 4-H activities.

"Governor Vilsack's proclamation of 4-H Youth Development Week is a great honor to the Iowa 4-H program," said Chuck Morris, associate director of 4-H youth programs at Iowa State University. "4-H is active in each of Iowa's 99 counties, where it supports the successful development of all youth."

Morris noted that 4-H has expanded its curriculum to accommodate youth in larger towns and cities. Today's 4-H offers projects and activities emphasizing science and technology. Many of the 4-H programs are available through community agencies and schools. 4-H also provides leadership and personal development opportunities through camps, trips, exchange programs and college scholarships. Iowa youth also continue to participate in traditional 4-H activities such as local clubs and livestock and gardening projects.

For more information about 4-H contact your local Iowa State University Extension county extension office or the state 4-H office at (515) 294-1017.
