Attend the Midwest Fall Growers' Conference

AMES, Iowa - For information on enhancing the operation, profitability and product quality of your greenhouse business, attend the Midwest Fall Growers' Conference on Oct. 18-20, 2000. On Oct. 20, you may receive your 2000 pesticide recertification credits in greenhouse (3G), ornamental (3O) and demonstration and research (10).

The conference will be held at the Adventureland Inn in Des Moines, Iowa. On Oct. 18, several tours to central Iowa greenhouse and horticultural operations are planned where hosts will share information on new growing techniques and ideas for meeting market demands.

On Oct. 19, the program features open discussions and seminars, including one by Jim Nau, Ball Seed Company, who will introduce "New Varieties from Seed," followed by "New Vegetative Varieties." Other seminar topics are "Nuts and Bolts of Greenhouse Fertilization," and "Geranium Culture and New Varieties." A roundtable discussion on perennials from production to marketing and a presentation on possible new greenhouse crops are planned. All speakers will be available at the end of the day's programming for questions during an "Ask the Experts Session."

On Oct. 20, presentations will feature Gloxinia production practices and the control of thrips and other greenhouse pests. Pesticide continuing instructional credits (CICs) in categories 3G, 3O and 10 are available by attending the complete morning session. Iowa State University Extension staff will provide an update on the Worker Protection Standard. Attendees will receive a free Worker Protection Packet and video produced by ISU through funding from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

Greenhouse suppliers have been invited to exhibit during the conference.

You may attend the conference on both Oct. 19 and 20 for $95. For an additional $45 you may participate in the bus tours on Oct. 18. If you only want to attend the pesticide recertification program on Oct. 20, the fee is $50.
