9/14/00 Contacts: 4-H Honors Iowa Department of Natural Resources AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is the 2000 recipient of the Iowa 4-H Partnership Award. The award is given annually to an organization, agency or business that has had an impact on the Iowa State University Extension 4-H program over a number of years. This year's award ceremony, held Aug. 26, was attended by 380 people. 4-H and IDNR have worked together extensively on the Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) and Fish Iowa. YHEC is a partnership between the Iowa 4-H shooting sports program and the wildlife programs of IDNR and Iowa State University Extension. The program, which is in its eighth year, allows 100 youth each year to compete in shooting and nonshooting events. IDNR provides personnel, equipment and supplies and assists in recruiting both youth participants and volunteers. Fish Iowa is a partnership between 4-H and the ISU Extension's 4-H Youth Development program and the IDNR Aquatic Education program. The program has produced the 4-H Responsible Angling Guide, an after school module for students in grades 4 through 6, day camps, seed money for 20 new 4-H sport fishing clubs across the state and other materials and activities. IDNR has participated in the program by giving funds, equipment, and volunteer services. "The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has made a significant difference in the lives of youth through working with the Iowa 4-H program," said Judy Levings, state 4-H youth development specialist. "We appreciate their commitment." Sonny Satre, IDNR recreational safety coordinator, and Barb Gigar, IDNR aquatic education coordinator, accepted the award on behalf of the Iowa DNR.
