9/14/00 Contacts: Cerro Gordo County 4-H Supporter Honored AMES, Iowa -- Lyle Mackey, Mason City, received a State 4-H Alumni Recognition award Aug. 26 in Ames. The award honors former 4-H members for their service to 4-H, community leadership, public service and success in their careers. Mackey retired from Iowa State University Extension in 1997. During his career he worked as the 4-H Youth assistant in Benton County, the county extension director in Plymouth County and the area extension director in Mason City. As a youth Mackey was a member of the Olin Hawkeyes 4-H Club in Jones County. He is a 4-H 1,000 donor to the Iowa 4-H Foundation and was named a 4-H Foundation Partner. From 1983 to 1997 he represented the ISU dean of extension on the Iowa 4-H Foundation Executive Committee. In his community, Mackey is president of the local chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He is active in his church, where he emphasizes social justice activities. He makes regular visits to hospital patients and helped start a local homeless shelter. Mackey and his wife Lorraine are the parents of eight children.
