Lucas County 4-H Supporter Honored

AMES, Iowa -- Joe Sellers, Chariton, received a State 4-H Alumni Recognition award in Des Moines during the Iowa State Fair. The award honors former 4-H members for their service to 4-H, community leadership, public service and success in their careers.

Sellers is a beef, sheep and forage livestock field specialist with Iowa State University Extension.

As a youth, Sellers was an eight-year member of the Brenton Master Farmers 4-H Club in Lucas County. As an adult he has served as the assistant superintendent or superintendent of the Iowa State Fair 4-H Sheep Department for the past 12 years. Six years ago he initiated the 4-H Lamb Classic, which emphasizes research-based education. In it's inaugural year 65 lambs were involved in the program. This year that number grew to 155.

In addition to his extension and 4-H activities, Sellers is a member of the Lucas County Development Corporation and vice president of the Iowa Forage and Grasslands Council. He also has served on the local board of Farm Bureau.
