Buchanan County 4-H Supporter Honored

AMES, Iowa -- Dan Cohen, Hazelton, received a State Honorary 4-H Member Recognition award Aug. 26 in Ames. The award honors adults who have not been 4-H members for their service to 4-H, community leadership, public service and success in their chosen careers. It is given at the annual state 4-H recognition banquet.

Cohen has been actively involved with 4-H for 15 years. During that time he has given the equivalent of one year of service. Cohen began an outdoor adventure leadership program with the Buchanan County Extension. He designed the program to give youth the skills they need to participate in the 4-H wilderness adventures areas such as the Boundary Waters, Isle Royale, Alaska and the Rockies.

"This award is meaningful to me because the work I have done in wilderness education and extension co-sponsored camps in Buchannan County has been among the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of my work," Cohen said.

"Dan is a special volunteer who shares his love and skill for the natural environment with the youth who attend a 4-H wilderness adventure," said Judy Levings, state 4-H youth development specialist. "Through the years he has made a difference in the lives of many youth and how they think about nature."

In addition to his 4-H activities, Cohen has served the Boy Scouts as a den leader for three years and is president of the Iowa Conservation Education Council.

Cohen is a naturalist with the Buchanan County Conservation Board and a freelance writer and editor. He is the father of two children.
