Warren County 4-H Supporter Honored

AMES, Iowa -- Craig Meyers, Indianola, received a State Honorary 4-H Member Recognition award Aug. 26 in Ames. The award honors adults who have not been 4-H members for their service to 4-H, community leadership, public service and success in their chosen careers. It is given at the annual state 4-H recognition banquet.

A certified wilderness backpack leader, Meyers has trained 4-H wilderness leaders and led trips to Isle Royale, the Rockies and Alaska. He has given 3,500 hours of volunteer work to the 4-H Wilderness Leadership Program alone. He also has taught at the Bulls Eye Basic camp at the 4-H Center and trained other shooting sports leaders. Meyers became involved with 4-H in 1981 when he helped design, write and distribute the 4-H Ding Darling School Enrichment Project, which taught young people the critical issues of soil, water and wildlife. It has been used in more than 40 states and in other countries.

"Craig is an incredible volunteer," said Judy Levings, state 4-H youth development specialist. "He loves sharing his love for the outdoors with teens, he is dependable, he is a joy to work with and he contributes so much to the overall state 4-H program. Volunteers like Craig make a significant difference to the lives of youth."

In addition to 4-H, Meyers has worked with church and adult groups and has served as a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts.

Meyers is a telecommunications and information systems coordinator for the Heartland Area Education Agency 11. He also has worked as a technology coordinator and multi-media specialist.
