NPKnowledge Web Site Now Available

AMES, Iowa - Iowa's farmers, crop consultants and homeowners who want to learn more about the issues surrounding crop, lawn, and garden nutrient uses and their possible environmental effects, management and potential regulation can turn to a new web resource for information. The web site (called NPKnowledge) can be found at: http://extension.agron.iastate.edu/NPKnowledge.

"NPKnowledge is filled with useful information," said John Creswell, Iowa State University coordinator for the Extension Nutrient Management Education Project. "For example, farmers who are concerned about scrutiny from the Environmental Protection Agency and environmentalists will find a new tool to use in deciding when to fall-apply anhydrous ammonia, using a current soil temperature reading for areas statewide. Applying anhydrous ammonia in the fall after the soil temperatures drop below 50 degrees (F) greatly reduces the risk of nitrates in water."

NPKnowledge is the result of many partners working together to find the most up-to-date, research-based information regarding the management of crop nutrients and soils for water quality. Funding for this site is provided by ISU Extension, ISU College of Agriculture and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) through a grant from the EPA.

Creswell works with Ubbo Agena of the DNR to coordinate the site. The Nutrient Management Information Team was organized in 1999 (a list of partners is available on the web site), to support the development of research-based educational materials and programs focused on improving the quality of Iowa's surface waters.
