Green Mountain Gardener Comes to Ames Nov. 11

AMES, Iowa -- Leonard Perry, extension professor at the University of Vermont, is known in the Northeast for his news column, the Green Mountain Gardener. He is becoming known across North America for his World Wide Web site that features information, links and research on herbaceous perennials.

Perry will be a speaker at the Herbaceous Perennial Saturday conference on Nov. 11 at the Scheman Building on the Iowa State University campus. "New and Under-utilized Perennials" is Perry's first topic. He will highlight perennials that are under-utilized, which he defines as "around a while but not really known or used enough" and new "at least somewhat proven and you can find for sale."

His second topic is "New from British Gardens for the Colonies." Perry will focus on plants and combinations, gardening design and cultural ideas he has picked up leading tours abroad. He continues to conduct tours for professionals, serious home gardeners and master gardeners.

"Interest in herbaceous perennials and ornamental horticulture continues to grow," said Cynthia Haynes, ISU Extension horticulturist and one of the conference organizers. "This conference is an excellent opportunity to learn more about designing and gardening with these wonderful plants."

Perry is one of four speakers at the conference The program also features Lauren Springer, an author and garden designer, who will address two sessions, one on marrying the personal and natural landscape, and another on new trends in color for the American garden. Pam Duthie, a landscape design firm owner, will talk about designing for continuous bloom. Cathy Wilkinson Barash, an editor for Better Homes and Gardens, will visualize how to have an artist's flair in the garden when choosing plant combinations.

The Herbaceous Perennial Saturday registration fee of $70 includes program materials and lunch. The registration deadline is Nov. 3. The program begins at 8:45 a.m. and concludes at 5 p.m. in the Scheman Building on the Iowa State University campus.
