State 4-H Horse Jamboree Winners Announced

AMES, Iowa -- 4-H'ers from across Iowa participated in the fourth annual 4-H Youth Development Horse Jamboree held in April at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The winners in several categories will represent Iowa 4-H at the 2001 Denver Horse Classic in January.

The Jamboree is sponsored by the Iowa Horse Industry Council, Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. It features a series of contests, giving youth an opportunity to demonstrate their equine knowledge and skills.

The 2000 winners in each category are:

Hippology Contest--senior division
First place, Cherokee County (Megan Weimold, Beth Rueter and Melanie Corrington)
Second place, Hancock County
Third place, Johnson County
Top individual, Megan Wiemold, Cherokee County
The Cherokee County team will participate in the Denver Horse Classic.

Hippology Contest--junior division
First place, Johnson County (Kristen Martz, Kelly Johnson, Sophie Krajewski, and Daniele DeBrower)
Second place, Van Buren County
Third place, Story County
Top individual, Melissa Pieffer, Washington County

Quiz Bowl--senior division
First place, Hamilton County (Jennifer Heeren, Angie Monthei, Crystal Ostrem and Lara Yungclas)
Second place, Clinton County
Third place, Johnson County
The Hamilton County team will participate in the Denver Horse Classic.

Quiz Bowl--junior division
First place, Johnson County (Kristen Martz, Kelly Johnson, Sophie Krajewski, and Daniele DeBrower)
Second place, Cherokee County

Public Speaking--senior division
First place, Joellen Harrington, Taylor County
