5/18/00 Contacts: 4-H Youth Wilderness Trip Registration Now Under Way AMES, Iowa -- Iowa youth can have an adventure with 4-H this summer, hiking, swimming, canoeing or kayaking around the United States. The Iowa 4-H Wilderness Leadership program is offering youth wilderness trips for Iowans ages 14 to 18. Youth will learn outdoor skills and local history as they participate in outdoor activities. The trips will be led by trained volunteers with extensive camping experience, but youth should have some previous outdoor camping experience. Tents, backpacks, canoes, cooking gear, food and transportation are provided. Most of the wilderness trips leave from the Iowa 4-H Education and Natural Resources Center near Madrid. This year youth can choose to backpack through Isle Royale National Park near Lake Superior, Grand Tetons National Park or the Alaskan wilderness. Youth also can canoe the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota or sea kayak around the Apostle Islands in northern Wisconsin. "Explore places in the United States where few go," said Brenda Allen, state program 4-H specialist. "See wildlife in their natural surroundings, and develop leadership and outdoor survival skills on one of the youth wilderness trips." The wilderness trips are one week and are offered from the last week in June through the middle of August. Registration is on a first come basis, but applications will be accepted up to 10 days before a trip if openings are available. For an application or more information, contact your Iowa State University Extension county office or Brenda Allen at the state ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development office at (515) 294-1567. |
