'One Final Boost' Sought for New 4-H Building AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's proposed Extension and 4-H building needs "one final financial boost" before breaking ground, said Stan Johnson, vice provost for ISU Extension. The proposed building will be a "front door" to the ISU campus for 4-H youth and others who use Extension and 4-H programs and services, Johnson said. The estimated cost of the building is $3.5 million, of which approximately 94 percent has been raised. Another $200,000 is needed. "We want to build a place where Iowans can enter the Iowa State campus and immediately feel at home. We want this to be a front door to the larger campus and its wonderful educational and research facilities," Johnson said. "But, we need help with the final 6 percent of the funding before we can start the building." Iowa State has provided some funding for the building, and a nine-month fundraising campaign has generated considerable support from the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, current and former Extension staff, 4-H faculty and staff members and other Extension supporters, Johnson said. All funding for the building must be in place before a site is selected and construction begins. "Across the state, thousands of families have worked with and enjoyed Extension and 4-H programs. We're hoping that individual Iowans can support this new doorway to Iowa State, and allow us to break ground," Johnson said. "I'm very optimistic that we could begin this year. Iowans have a deep fondness for 4-H and ISU." Information on the Extension and 4-H building fund can be obtained at the local county extension office or from the 4-H Foundation Office on campus at (515) 294-1537.
