Know Your Oaks

AMES, Iowa--Learn about Iowa's official state tree in a new fact sheet from Iowa State University Extension. "Iowa's Oaks" describes the two categories -- red and white -- and the 12 different types found within the state, according to Paul Wray, extension forester. For example, the acorns on white oaks mature in one growing season while acorns on red oaks require two growing seasons. Also discussed is how oaks can be incorporated into new landscapes.

"Iowa's Oaks" is publication number RG 701 and is available at Reiman Gardens in Ames, from any Iowa State University Extension county office or on the Internet at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/Pages/pubs/ga.htm.
