Grants Available for Youth Projects

AMES, Iowa -- Youth interested in making a difference in their communities should take note. This year, the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service will support youth groups by awarding $5,000 in grant money to those interested in helping their communities. No individual grant will exceed $250.

Grant applications are due to the state 4-H office by May 5. Grant guidelines require groups of youth to combine their efforts with senior citizen groups, adult service agencies, or other groups to complete a project that would benefit the community. Youth leadership roles, project planning and sustainability also will be considered when funding projects.

The grants help fulfill the Iowa Commission on Volunteerism's desire to continue supporting the five points of American's Promise in Iowa. One point emphasizes youth taking active roles in their communities.

According to Wendy Brock, state 4-H youth development specialist, 21 groups were awarded grants of up to $250 last year. These projects included establishing a butterfly garden, planting trees, restoring cemeteries, and landscaping in parks and around nursing homes. Overall, last year's projects involved more than 1,500 volunteers who were able to make significant changes in their communities.

To obtain an application or more information about these grants visit the Iowa Commission of Volunteerism web site at http://www.state.ia.us/ided/crd/icvs/ or contact your local county ISU Extension office.
