6/27/00 Contacts: Students Learn and Have Fun With Project N.E.W. AMES, Iowa -- Have you ever wondered what a prairie pothole is? Or how energy has changed over the centuries? Several 4th through 8th graders now can learn about these and many other environmental facts and conservation tips with the help of Project N.E.W. Project N.E.W. is a multimedia program that teaches students about natural habitats, energy and water. It is designed to be used by schools, science centers, museums, home-school educators and anyone else interested in helping young people learn about the environment. Developed by Iowa State University Extension 4-H and the Heartland Area Education Agency, Project N.E.W. helps students learn about the environment while having fun. It features an interactive dictionary, games, quizzes, slides, video clips and Web sites. Project N.E.W. also highlights environmental areas and events in Iowa such as a wind farm, the flood of 1993 and the Granger marsh. This project was funded by the Resource Enhancement and Protection Act conservation education program, U.S. WEST, the Bob Joslin Memorial Fund in Cedar Rapids and the Iowa 4-H Foundation.
