Howard County 4-H'er's Horse Reining Video Available

Ames, Iowa--Zach Nosbisch has made his 4-H leadership project, a video entitled "Reining 101," available to all 4-H'ers.

Reining teaches riding by controlling the horse's every movement, Nosbisch said. The horse learns pivots, patterns, slides, rollbacks and lead changes

The 20-minute video teaches the definition, history, basic equipment, equitation, patterns, maneuvers and scoring of reining. It is for beginners who don't know very much about reining, and for anyone who wants to learn, Nosbisch said.

Nosbisch, a 15-year-old from Cresco, has been a 4-H'er for 6 years.

"This is an opportunity for 4-H'ers to teach other 4-H'ers," Nosbisch said. "I've learned a tremendous amount and am excited about sharing my knowledge."

"4-H'ers teaching other 4-H'ers is an ideal way for all youth to learn more and grow in their knowledge and experience," said Denise Schwab, Iowa State University Extension 4-H and youth development specialist. She added, "I think it is tremendous that a 4-H'er will go outside the normal show routine to learn a new aspect of showing horses &endash; reining -- and is willing to share what he learned with other 4-H'ers."

"Reining 101" is available for loan at the Howard County Extension office and at the state 4-H office, (515) 294-3187. For additional information contact Denise Schwab at that number as well.
