Pocahontas County 4-H Family Welcomes Exchange Student from Costa Rica

Ames, Iowa -- Yazmin Mary Mora, a 20-year-old exchange student from Costa Rica in the International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) representative program, will visit Albert City through July 23. Mora is staying with Lynn and Jerolyn Wenell and their three children Lewis, 12, Reuben, 9, and Brice, 6. This is the first time the Wenells have been a host family in the IFYE program.

"(We wish) to expose our kids (to the exchange program) and learn about someone from another county," Jerolyn Wenell said. "It sounds like fun, and we enjoy getting to know other people."

Mora will visit four Iowa families between now and Sept. 9. She also will stay with host families in Boone and Polk counties before visiting host families in Tennessee.

IFYE program participants visit the United States from Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa to live and work with several host families for three to six months. Participants are expected to participate in daily American life. They hope to interact with host families, community organizations and 4-H groups while in the United States.

"We feel this program is important because of the opportunities it provides Iowa families to learn about another culture," said Brenda Allen, state program 4-H specialist. "You also learn more about yourself when you share your culture with others."

For more information about IFYE and future host opportunities, contact your county extension office or Brenda Allen at the state ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development office at (515) 294-1567.
