Hardin County 4-H Family Welcomes Exchange Student from Switzerland

Ames, Iowa -- Daniel Franz Niederberger, a 26-year-old exchange student from Switzerland in the International 4-H Youth Exchange Representative program, will visit Ackley Aug. 20 through Sept. 9. He will stay with Ken and Sandi Butt, who have hosted IFYE students from Norway and Costa Rica.

"We have always enjoyed making friends with our neighbors in other parts of the world," Sandi Butt said. "Our knowledge only increases as we learn and help teach others from other parts of the world."

Niederberger will visit three Iowa host families between July 1 and Sept. 9. He will stay with families in Floyd and Chickasaw counties before visiting Hardin County. After his stay in Iowa, he will visit host families in Ohio.

IFYE program participants visit the United States from Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and the Africa to live and work with several host families for three to six weeks. Participants are expected to participate in daily American life. They interact with host organizations, which are similar to 4-H.

"Being a host family gives you the opportunity to learn about another culture without leaving Iowa," said Brenda Allen, state 4-H youth program specialist. "It also gives families the opportunity to grow together as they share a part of their lives with someone new."

For more information about IFYE and future host opportunities, contact your county extension office or Brenda Allen at the state ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development office at (515) 294-1567.
