Jischkes Named Honorary 4-H Members

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University President Martin Jischke and wife Patty received the 2000 Iowa Honorary 4-H Award June 22 at the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference banquet.

"There are many adults who give time, energy and support to the 4-H program but were never 4-H members," said Wendy Brock, 4-H Youth and Development specialist. "With these awards we would like to recognize two individuals who have provided behind-the-scenes support to the youth of Iowa, especially those connected with the 4-H program."

President Jischke's involvement includes added support and encouragement for various aspects of the 4-H program. He played an important role in encouraging all colleges at Iowa State to become involved with the Iowa 4-H conference and led campaign efforts to create a 4-H Extension building on campus. He also congratulated many 4-H scholarship recipients and attended the Sale of Champions at the Iowa State Fair.

Patty Jischke has been an advocate for youth since she came to Iowa in 1991. While serving as co-chair for the Iowa Summit in 1998, she realized the outstanding leadership of 4-H State Council members. Since then she has invited 4-H'ers to speak at the Iowa Summit, governor's conferences on volunteerism and state asset-building conferences. For the past three years she has joined 4-H delegates from the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference in community service projects. This year she hosted one of the conference workshops. Patty, with Stan Johnson, vice provost for extension, originated the idea for an environmental workshop, Touch the Land. This is an effort that promotes a partnership between Trees Forever and the 4-H program.

The Iowa Honorary 4-H Awards are given annually.
