February 15 Deadline For ISU's Hixson Scholarship Applications

AMES, Iowa -- Applications for Iowa State University's Christina Hixson Opportunity Awards are due February 15.

The renewable $2,500 scholarships are awarded to 100 Iowans each year. They are intended for incoming freshmen who, if not for the opportunity awards, might not otherwise be able to attend ISU. It is the goal of the program to award a scholarship to a student in every Iowa county.

Christina Hixson, a native of Clarinda, is the sole trustee of the Lied Foundation Trust, Las Vegas, Nev., which donated $5 million to establish the scholarship program.

The Hixson Award program focuses on students who show a potential to succeed at ISU, but come from challenging family environments or have extreme financial need.

To be considered, Iowa high school students must complete and submit a Hixson Award application by February 15, accompanied by a recommendation highlighting their eligibility for the award. Students also must complete the ISU admission process and have submitted the 2000-01 Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) form by February 15.

Applications and further information regarding the Hixson Awards are available from Iowa high school guidance counselors and ISU Extension offices in each county, or by calling the Hixson Opportunity Awards program, 800-262-3810 (toll free) or 515-294-6479.
