Make sure you're prepared for the next big winter storm

Given the weather events of the last week, Iowa motorists may want to start thinking about their safety during future winter storms. Iowa State University Extension has a publication that can help individuals prepare for winter driving.

"Stalled...but Safe" is an eleven-page publication that discusses things motorists should know before traveling in winter weather conditions. Topics such as planning your trip, tires, driving techniques and hypothermia are addressed to help anyone prepare or deal with situations such as stalled, stranded or snowed-in cars.

In addition, the publication suggests items to keep in the car such as a specific supply of food, clothing and car equipment for emergencies. Wind-chill comparisons and winter weather terms are also included to help individuals access any serious conditions outside their car.

Further your knowledge of winter weather motorist preparation, and put a copy of NCR 170, Stalled…but Safe, in the glovebox, just in case. To obtain your free copy, contact your county extension office or the Extension Distribution Center, 119 Printing and Publications Building, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011, (515) 294-5247.
