Confinement Site Manure Applicators Need Recertification
AMES, Iowa -- Confinement site manure applicators who became initially certified in 1999 need to attend a two-hour continuing instruction course offered by Iowa State University Extension in February or March this year.
"Iowa law requires confinement site manure applicators to obtain two hours of continuing education each year of their three-year certification period. If applicators fail to get the two hours each year, they will be required to pass a written exam to become recertified," said Angela Rieck-Hinz, ISU Extension program specialist and coordinator of the manure certification program.
During the two-hour workshop, which must be attended for the full length of time, applicators will learn about rules, storage and handling, emergency plans and safety, and record keeping of manure application.
This workshop also will serve as initial certification for those confinement site applicators who are not currently certified.
Commercial manure applicators can attend a satellite program on Thursday, Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to become recertified or to be initially certified. Commercial applicator certification is for one year and applicators must either attend a meeting or take a written exam each year.
Contact your local county extension office for meeting dates and locations or for more information. There is no cost to attend these meetings.
