Workshop Trains New Judges For 4-H Fairs

If you like to help youth learn and listen to how they met their goals developing a 4-H exhibit, plan to attend training for 4-H judges, Saturday, March 4.

"We especially welcome those who are new to 4-H judging. We need more adults who can support youth in this way," said Shirley Stakey, program specialist for Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development. Current judges, ISU Extension staff, 4-H volunteers and others interested in working with youth and fairs also are encouraged to attend.

Seven locations will host the March 4 training from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. They are Algona, Boone, Cherokee, Creston, Iowa City, New Hampton and Ottumwa.

Topics for the workshop are agriculture and natural resources, child development, clothing, home improvement, horticulture, pets, photography and visual art. There will also be a special session for new judges. Participants can choose to attend three of the topics from concurrent sessions.

Registration is due Feb. 1 to the State 4-H Youth Development Office. For more information, contact a local county ISU Extension office, the State 4-H Youth Development Office, 32 Curtiss Hall, Ames, IA 50014, or phone them at (515) 294-1519 or (515) 294-1531, or e-mail x1litzel@exnet.iastate.edu or x1stakey@exnet.iastate.edu.
