Organic Crop Production Course Offered

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University is offering a new course on organic crop production through the Iowa Communications Network (ICN), according to Kathleen Delate, ISU Extension organic crop specialist. The course will be offered on six consecutive Mondays beginning Jan. 24. ISU faculty and organic producers are instructors for the sessions. Each session will cover different topics related to organic crop production including:

Jan. 24 Overview on organics (philosophy, history, regulations) and soil health

Jan. 31 Composting, pasture health and integrated weed management

Feb. 07 Organic pest management (insects, disease, nematodes)

Feb. 14 Organic grain crops production and marketing

Feb. 21 Organic horticultural crops (fruits, vegetables, herbs) production and marketing

Feb. 28 Livestock production and marketing

The course is open to both students (for ISU credits as AGRON/HORT 494X-2 credits) and non-students. Continuing education units (CEUs) also are offered. The sessions will be presented on Monday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. On campus, the sessions will be presented in the Brenton Center (13 Curtiss Hall); off-campus, the sessions will be held at ICN sites in Alta, Atlantic, Charles City, Corydon, Decorah, Fairfield, Iowa City, Orange City and Titonka.

Non-student registration fees are $10 per session. Students registering for course credits will continue to meet after the initial six sessions to identify ways to apply principles to on-farm experience.
