2/15/00 Contacts: Horse Jamboree Offers Kids A Chance To Get Involved Ames, Iowa -- 4-H youth, ages 9 to 18, can compete in Horse Jamboree, held in conjunction with the Iowa Horse Fair April 7 to 10 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Horse Jamboree is the youth portion of the annual Iowa Horse Fair. It consists of contests and activities open to all children who love horses. "The Iowa Horse Jamboree offers a series of horse and horseless events to educate youth with and without horses," said Peggy Miller, ISU equine specialist and Jamboree coordinator. "The Jamboree allows youth interested in horses to compete in a friendly, educational atmosphere." One of the newer Jamboree events is a model horse show. Traditional activities include public speaking, essay writing, painting, posters, drawing, photography, clothing, quiz bowl, hippology, horse demonstration and team grooming. Contestants who compete in hippology (the study of horses) or the demonstration can enter as individuals or as a team. Quiz bowl entries must be teams. The top senior 4-H hippology and quiz bowl teams will represent Iowa at the National 4-H Horse Classic in Denver in June. The riding clinics are open to youth age 9 and over who can bring a horse to ride. This year's riding clinics include western horsemanship, showmanship, western pleasure, trail, equitation, hunt seat, jumping, barrels, poles, driving, and more. The entry deadline for teams and individuals in all categories is March 10. Contestants may enter more than one event. For more information or to enter, contact your local county Extension office or Beth Minner at the state 4-H office, (515) 294-8617. |
