2/14/00 Contacts: Competitive Swine Seminar Series Set For Early March AMES, Iowa -- A Competitive Swine Seminar series will be held at four locations March 2 and 3. The series, sponsored by the Iowa Pork Producers Association and Iowa State University Extension, will focus on new issues in marketing and production contracts for pork producers. The seminars will present information on how contracts work, how to evaluate the pros and cons of a contract, and how to read and understand a contract. The National Pork Producers Council and the Iowa Pork Industry Center also have provided assistance for these programs. The agenda is the same for each two-hour program. Presenters are Laura Cheney from Michigan State University, and Steve Reno and Steve Moline of the Iowa Attorney General's farm division. As an agricultural economist, Cheney has focused on issues of vertical integration and contracting in the pork and poultry industries. She is involved in research and extension at MSU and her responsibilities include a significant emphasis in the pork industry. Reno and Moline are both Iowa natives with close ties to agriculture. Reno is from southeast Iowa and served on several boards dealing with agricultural issues before his appointment to the AG's farm division in 1989. Moline is from north central Iowa and serves on the governor's ag task force. He joined the farm division in 1990. All pork producers are encouraged to attend one of the four programs. There is no cost and no preregistration is necessary. The programs will be held at these locations and times: March 2, Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in
Waterloo, 9:30-11:30 a.m. The program at the Armstrong Farm near Lewis also will be carried on the Iowa Communications Network program at various locations throughout the state. These locations will be available at a later date. For more information on the series, contact ISU Extension livestock field specialist Carl Neifert at (515) 462-1001. ml: isufarm |
