8/23/00 Contacts: IPIC Fall Seminar Focuses on Employee Management AMES, Iowa - Livestock producers who are searching for employees or trying to decide whether employees are necessary in their operation need look no further than the Iowa Pork Industry Center's fall seminar, "Finding and Managing Employees: Sources and Resources for the Potential Employer." The seminar is cosponsored by the Iowa Pork Producers Association and Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and will take place in three locations on separate dates. The program will be held at the Kenbrae South Restaurant in Sheldon on Wednesday, Sept. 13, the Northeast Iowa Research Farm at Nashua on Thursday, Sept. 14, and Montgomery Hall at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Iowa City on Friday, Sept. 15. Keynote speaker is Don Tyler, management consultant from Indiana. He will present information on nontraditional labor sources, motivation and communication between employer and employee, alternative sources of potential employees, writing a successful ad and responding to applicants. Other session topics include results of a nationwide survey on employee wage and benefit packages, using the Internet to find employees and hone management skills, using robotics to replace human labor, community college livestock employee training programs and localized presentations by area ISU Extension livestock field specialists. Although some information specific to swine operations will be presented, the program as a whole is appropriate for all producers. Registration at all three locations starts at 9 a.m. The program begins at 9:30 a.m. and will end about 4 p.m. The cost is $10 per person for those who preregister by Sept. 8.
