8/4/00 News Release Contacts: New 4-H Bean Bear Arrives at the Iowa State Fair AMES, Iowa -- Bean bear enthusiasts may have a polka-dotted species in their collection, but they probably would be hard-pressed to find a "clover-dotted" bear. That is the best way to describe Clarinda, a limited-edition 4-H bean bear debuting at the 2000 Iowa State Fair. Clarinda is a green bear dotted with white four-leaf clovers and the year 2001 on the front paw. The bear shares the name of the southwest Iowa town in Page County where the pioneering efforts of Jessie Field Shambaugh contributed to the creation of the national 4-H organization. "Next year marks the 100th anniversary of 4-H in Page County, and we wanted to commemorate the event with a special bear," said Albert Grunenwald, associate director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Proceeds from the sale of Clarinda bears will support 4-H youth programs throughout Iowa. The organization currently reaches more than 120,000 young people in grades K-12. Clarinda joins Clarion (1999) and Clover (2000) as the third Iowa 4-H bear developed by Glory Be (trademarked) Collectibles of Fallbrook, California, and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. The bears sell for $12 and come with a name tag and collector number. Only 5,025 Clarinda bears were manufactured. They go on sale to the public at 9:00 AM on August 10 in the 4-H Exhibit Building. ml: isufarm |
